Favourite sculptures

Winged Victory (Nike) of Samothrace (circa 190 BC)

Staged in spectacular fashion very much in keeping with Hellenistic taste,

she could be seen from afar by ships approaching the island of Samothrace, in the northeast Aegean.

The proportions, the rendering of the bodily forms, the manner in which the drapery flapping in the wind is handled,

and the expansiveness of the highly theatrical gesture all bear witness to the search for realism in sculpture.

What the sculptor was seeking to depict was divine beauty, that of Plato’s ideals, not worldly reality.

This image “that expresses beauty in a language which is always our own” (Alain Pasquier)

provides a fine answer to the eternal quest for Beauty; in short, it is a timeless masterpiece.

Millesgården on the island of Lidingö in Stockholm

Carl Milles acquired a property 1906 on

the cliff of Herserud high above lake Värtan on the island of Lidingö.

His intention was to build a home incorporating space for his art studio.

The house was designed by architect Carl M. Bengtsson and was built 1908.

During the following half-century Millesgården was expanded and developed

in collaboration with Carl's half-brother, architect Evert Milles.

 

In 1936 Millesgården was constituted into a foundation, which was donated to the Swedish people.

In anticipation of Carl's return to Millesgården, 1950 saw the construction of the spacious lower terrace with

monumental replicas of free-standing and fountain sculpture from Sweden and the USA.

The lower terrace was nearing completion at the time of Carl Milles' death, September 19, 1955.

Målningen var ursprungligen tänkt för det nya Rådhuset i Amsterdam,

visserligen invigt redan 1655 men då inte färdigutsmyckat.

Uppdraget gick till Rembrandt sedan den ursprungligen tilltänkte konstnären Govært Flinck,

en av Rembrandts elever, avlidit. Rembrandt och flera andra konstnärer fick uppdraget att

fullborda utsmyckningen av lunetterna i det stora galleriet i Rådhusets centralhall.
